Mobilegeddon – Is your website ready for the May 2016 Google algorithm update?

If you have any part to play in the internet marketing of your organisation then you have probably heard of the dramatic term coined ‘Mobilegeddon’ which harks back to an announcement made by Google in 2015 that non-mobile optimised websites would be pushed down the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). This was part one of an effort on Google’s part to reward websites that were offering a greater user experience when searching on a mobile device.

On May 12th 2016, Google announced that part two had been rolled out – something they explained would happen back in March. In essence, what the new Google algorithm update means for website owners is that if your website is not ‘mobile friendly’ then you will not rank as highly as a website that is mobile friendly – although this is still not strictly speaking the whole of it.

Google does offer a get out clause with the algorithm in that a website that offers real value to its users and is not mobile friendly can still outperform a website that offers less value and is mobile friendly. This can lead to plenty of confusion but what is crystal clear is that the mobile friendly signal has been given far more weight in the updated May 2016 algorithm.

Perhaps the best way to think about how it could affect you is like this. If you have two websites that should both attract a top search result based on a number of factors and one is mobile friendly and the other is not, then the one that is mobile friendly will outrank the website that isn’t.
